About the Artist
Composer, flutist and vocal artist Janice Misurell-Mitchell draws on the energies and sounds of urban life to construct her musical palette. Her music explores relationships between different areas of expression - traditional sounds and extended techniques, sound and text, sound and movement, aural and visual forms, classical and popular forms. She believes that music being written now needs to reflect the times, but in a way
that makes demands on its listeners and challenges their assumptions.

Critics Talk About JM-M
“….seamlessly weaving elements from high modernism with jazz, Latin, blues, and even funk into an amalgam that is completely its own thing…” —Frank J. Oteri, New Music Box
“Janice is a master performer, amazing vocal range, extremely precise ear for interval inflection, shape-shifting facial expressions and gestures. Like a musical Zelig….”
—Jeff Kowalkowski
“Misurell-Mitchell was a one-woman hurricane performing her bravado Amendment Blues #1.… What is most striking about this complex web of music and politics is [her] ability to take simple melodies and skew them in order to create both satire and protest.”
—ML Rantala, Hyde Park Herald
